Calling all super heroes, sidekicks and comic book fans: it’s time to don your cape and head to the San Antonio River Walk. The annual Rey Feo Super Hero River Parade for Education is returning on September 26 with a colorful lineup of costumed characters, decorated floats, live entertainment and a special tribute to the local heroes who keep San Antonio safe.
Now in its eighth year, the ticketed parade has become a favorite family-friendly event while also raising money for the Rey Feo Scholarship Foundation. The parade is one of the foundation’s biggest fundraisers, generating more than $100,000 to date for scholarships that help deserving San Antonio-area high school seniors pursue a college education. The event took a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic but has continued to grow since returning.
The fun begins before the parade even hits the water. Along La Villita Street, families can enjoy live music, dancers, food booths and comic-themed activations, with plenty of opportunities to meet and see favorite action characters up close. The festival sets the stage for the evening’s main attraction: a parade featuring approximately 25 elaborately decorated floats making their way along the River Walk, and led by former Spurs’ star Danny Green, this year’s Grand Marshal.
Among the stars will be familiar super heroes, like Spider-Man and other popular characters from movies and comics. But the parade isn’t just about fictional heroes. First responders will join the costumed characters on the floats, giving the event a chance to celebrate the real-life heroes of San Antonio. First responders will also receive special recognition during the evening at the Arneson River Theatre.
The parade will be accompanied by an evening of live entertainment, including performances by Patsy Torres and other entertainers. With music, characters, dancing and the colorful floats moving along the river, there will be plenty happening throughout the night.
For families looking to make an evening of it, VIP tickets at the Arneson River Theatre include beverages, and children under 5 can attend for free, with a limit of two children per family.
More than just a spectacle, the Super Hero River Parade gives families a chance to have fun while supporting a cause that helps local students. After raising more than $100,000 through the event so far, organizers are hoping this year’s celebration will push that number even higher — all while giving San Antonio plenty of reasons to cheer for both its fictional and real-life heroes.
