The colors flash before you first; the sound and movement follow. Jewel-bright reds, greens and blues shimmer across the stage. Gold-trimmed silk flashes under the lights, along with elaborate jewelry at dancers’ wrists, necks and foreheads. Then comes the sound: rows of tiny bells wrapped around the dancers’ ankles turn stamping feet into percussion, keeping intricate rhythms with the exotic sounds of percussion, flute, violin and voice. Now watch the dancers’ faces. Eyes dart and widen. Eyebrows lift. A head tilts. A hand unfurls. Fingers form precise shapes. Expressions flash from anger to tenderness, sorrow to surprise to joy. Eyes, hands, faces and bodies work together until movement becomes language. The dancers are telling stories. This is Bharatanatyam, the ancient classical dance tradition of South India, an art form that traveled thousands of miles and across generations to put down deep roots in San Antonio.

For more than 12 years, Sasha Krukava and Nurlan Kinerbayev have shared a life in ballet. They have built professional careers spanning Europe and the United States, danced some of classical ballet’s most iconic roles, and spent much of that time performing side by side.

San Antonio’s performing arts scene is stepping into the 2026–27 season with more energy, ambition and creativity than ever. From bold new productions to beloved classics, the city’s leading arts organizations are rolling out lineups that showcase just how vibrant and diverse our cultural community has become. The arts in San Antonio are at a crossroads. Rising costs, shifting philanthropic priorities and evolving community expectations are reshaping how visual and performing arts organizations survive, grow and serve the public.

Since 1957, Fiesta Noche del Rio has lit up the Arneson River Theatre with the color, rhythm and spirit that define San Antonio. What began as a lively summer showcase of Mexican, Spanish and Texas music and dance has grown into one of the city’s most beloved traditions — part cultural celebration, part family ritual and part philanthropic powerhouse. For many locals, it simply isn’t summer until they’ve spent an evening under the stars along the River Walk, swept up in the energy of the show.

San Antonio’s cultural roots run deep, but in recent years, something unexpected has been happening in its performing arts ecosystem. Beyond large-scale productions and the familiar rhythms of mariachi and Tejano, a quieter revolution, built on intimacy, virtuosity and the power of small ensembles, has been slowly unfolding. Chamber music, once considered a niche corner of the classical world, is experiencing a full-fledged renaissance in the Alamo City.
