Stars & Stripes on Houston Street

San Antonio’s Signature July 4th Celebration

By:

San Antonio’s Independence Day traditions are bigger, bolder and more spectacular — and Stars & Stripes on Houston Street is leading the charge, returning in 2026 as part of the city’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

What began as a patriotic parade has evolved into a full-day experience that transforms Houston Street into a corridor of energy, movement and celebration. The day now kicks off with the inaugural Stars & Stripes Downtown 5K — a race that winds through the heart of the city and finishes at the newly revitalized Civic Park in Hemisfair. Runners flow straight into a post-race celebration that sets the tone for the rest of the day.

From there, the spotlight shifts to the Stars & Stripes Parade — a tradition that has already earned national attention. In fact, the event was named one of the top Fourth of July destinations in 2025 by NBC’s Today and will be featured in a national ABC broadcast highlighting Independence Day celebrations across the country. For local organizations, marching down Houston Street isn’t just festive — it’s a chance to represent San Antonio on a national stage.

Last year, Centro San Antonio introduced a sold-out VIP experience atop the historic Majestic Theatre marquee for parade viewing. The VIP experience is back this year at the Gunter Hotel and includes premium viewing access, indoor amenities and elevated hospitality experiences.

Then, the celebration expands into the Stars & Stripes Music & Food Fest back a Civic Park, debuting in 2026 with live performances, local flavors and the kind of summer atmosphere that defines July in Texas. The night culminates in a milestone moment: the July 4th fireworks show at Civic Park, lighting up downtown with a dazzling tribute to the nation’s 250 years.

A meaningful thread runs through these festivities: a tribute to Medal of Honor recipients. Each year, more than 70 commemorative banners line Houston Street, honoring both living and fallen heroes whose courage and sacrifice embody the spirit of the holiday.

With its blend of athleticism, community pride, national recognition and patriotic spectacle, Stars & Stripes on Houston Street has become more than an event — it’s a defining San Antonio tradition in the making.

The Psychology of Space

Rumi, the 13th century Persian poet, famously wrote, “Where there is ruin, there is hope for a treasure.” It’s a sentiment that feels especially resonant in a city like San Antonio, where the past isn’t simply preserved — it’s reimagined. While the spaces we’re about to explore are far from ruins, they share that same spirit of transformation. Through adaptive reuse, former functional and commercial spaces have been given new life.

One-of-a-kind City

I started writing this letter in Pennsylvania while visiting my son and daughter-in-law. It was a lovely first time to visit, and as we were driving through the picturesque countryside — and checking Fallingwater off my Bucket List — I realized how magical first visits are. The ones that make you start planning your next visit right away. And another thing kept coming to mind: If I were visiting San Antonio for the very first time, I’d fall for it — fast. The colors, the sounds, the food, the warmth of the people, the way history and creativity sit side-by-side. It’s one of those cities that doesn’t try too hard; it just is charming. Whether you are a first-time visitor discovering our vibrant city or a local that knows all the best places to go, I hope you find that sense of wonder woven through this issue.
